Our Story Begins Here
You too can become a Hero for HIPpy
Heroes for HIPpy is a student-led social impact organization mobilizing community champions to end hip dysplasia. Founded through a children’s book project by then Gr. 8 student Travis Gao, the book featured stories from Olympians and Paralympians that shared stories about determination and resilience in the face of adversity.
Heroes for HIPpy uses sport, storytelling, and experiential events to raise awareness for early detection and treatment. By engaging students, athletes, and healthcare partners, the organization empowers young leaders to turn empathy into action, helping ensure every child has the opportunity to move, play, and thrive.
Meet the Founder
Travis Gao is a student leader and founder of Heroes for HIPpy, a youth-led initiative raising awareness for hip dysplasia and the importance of early detection in children. Motivated by the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to move, play, and thrive, Travis has combined his passion for sports with advocacy and storytelling to drive meaningful impact.
Through Heroes for HIPpy, Travis authored a children’s book featuring the stories of Olympians and Paralympians who overcame physical challenges, using their journeys to inspire resilience and hope. The project has raised funds and awareness in support of children’s hip health and has evolved into the Heroes Cup, a community basketball event that brings together young athletes, celebrities, and partners to champion inclusion and mobility.
Travis continues to lead with curiosity, empathy, and action, using sport as a platform to build community, spark conversations, and empower young people to create change.
